2020 has been a year of twists and turns, but having made it to the end, I find myself counting its blessings. For me, the greatest of these was being selected in April to serve as the Executive Director of the What If Foundation.
The What If Foundation began with a single yet powerful question that ignites my heart 20 years later: “What if I could do something to help these children?” Based on your letters and our conversations, I know you feel the same way. Despite everything you have faced in this unprecedented year, your gifts and goodwill in support of our mission keep coming. Thank you, truly. Together, we are helping to keep the dream of Father Jeri and Margaret alive.
Like so many who have faced transitions and new beginnings this year, it has been a challenge for me to find ways to connect in person with friends, colleagues and partners. COVID-19 restrictions and the unfortunate reality of escalating gang violence have prevented me from traveling to Haiti. I still look forward to speaking firsthand with the children and families of Ti Plas Kazo, and the staff and volunteers of Na Rive who have created such an oasis of hope in their community. But I was delighted when I finally had the opportunity to meet Lavarice Gaudin in Miami earlier this month. From our many phone calls, I know him to be indefatigable, highly intelligent, and truly inspiring. But meeting him in person was something else. I was deeply moved by Lavarice’s passionate commitment to serving his people and helping transform his country, one child at a time. My own life journey has been guided by a similar commitment and focus, and I felt that bond of brotherhood.
I hope you’ll join all of us here at the What If Foundation in recognizing the unique and impactful bond we have with our brothers and sisters in Haiti, and how that model of mutual trust and respect remains a bright light in a sometimes dark world. Your continued support makes it all possible. From all of us here at the What If Foundation, I wish you happy holidays and a bright, hopeful new year.
Together in Service,
What If Foundation
