Supporting Father Jeri School students to fulfill their dreams

We just received these photos from our partners in Haiti.  They were taken earlier this month and capture the spirit of the students at the Father Jeri School who are grateful and determined to complete the school year strong in the midst of all the uncertainty and insecurity that surrounds them. 

“Classes are continuing into the summer to make up for the days that were missed due to the security crisis. Everyone is studying hard for their year-end exams.  There is extra support for students scheduled to take state exams in July and August.  The Father Jeri School is one of a few schools in Haiti with a 100% pass rate on the state exams.  Even during this very difficult and stressful time, our students are giving their best to get a good result.  They are proud of the education they receive here and are holding onto hope that they will be able to fulfill their dreams.”

Approximately 90% of schools in Haiti are private, which severely limits access to education for most children who cannot afford the fees.  This reality inspired Na Rive to begin an education program back in 2001 with funds provided by the What If Foundation.  We started small, paying for four student scholarships, and expanded over the years.  Today, over 500 students aged 3-19 years old are enrolled in Pre-K through high school at the Father Jeri School.  Most receive full or partial scholarships made possible thanks to What If Foundation donors. 

This year has been the school’s most challenging year given the economic, political and humanitarian crises that have been unfolding.  With incredible determination, Father Jeri School teachers and staff have found ways to keep the school open, providing students with much needed stability and emotional support in addition to the school’s regular curriculum.

Katty recently spoke with a high school student about his experience at the Father Jeri School and shared this with us:

“We have a budding agronomist named Joseph, who is 18 years old and told me he has cherished this dream since his early childhood. He wishes to use his education to contribute to the country’s development because, for him, agriculture is the engine of development. Coming from a modest family, he is unsure if he will be able to attend university but works hard to succeed this academic year. He advises young people his age to hold on to their dreams because together they will shape the future of the country. He is proud to have joined the Father Jeri School and thanks all the donors for their generous contributions.”

We join Joseph in thanking you for your ongoing support, which positively impacts the lives of hundreds of children and their families in Ti Plas Kazo every week — at the Father Jeri School, at the community food program, and at the Kay Lasante health clinic.  Our partners couldn’t do what they do without you.  They truly achieve miracles with the funds we provide.  Thank you for accompanying them through this most challenging time with your thoughts, prayers, and financial support.
