Today we invite you to join us in celebrating the birthday of Sophis Dorsainvil, a valued board member, IT professional, skilled performer, avid soccer player, social dancer and above all else, a passionate supporter of all things Haitian. Sophis, born in Cap-Haïtian, raised in Port-au-Prince, and longtime resident of the Bay Area, joined the What If Foundation’s board in 2020 with the intention of contributing a Haitian-centric perspective and informed angle and approach to the work we are all so excited to be a part of.
“I’ve always been skeptical about occidental organizations working in Haiti. More often than not, despite good intentions, I found that their programs are seldom without pre-judgements about Haiti’s spiritual, educational, cultural and developmental needs. What drew me to What If Foundation is that we don’t work in Haiti as problem solvers but rather as resource facilitators for on-the-ground Haitian-led organizations that are troubleshooting and problem-solving for their respective communities.”
Sophis’ dedication to improving the Haitian condition reaches far beyond his work with What If Foundation. In 2018, he ran a successful Indiegogo campaign for #getdown4haiti, a project that aimed to create employment opportunities for talented youth in Aquin, a small town 3 hours south of Port-au-Prince. The project resulted in a professional grade music video that was produced, filmed and edited by the youth of Aquin creating over 40 paying jobs in the community. Additionally, a music production program was developed for students as a way of saying thank you. Despite facing seemingly insurmountable barriers, just yesterday, Sophis and his team inaugurated the Aquin Music Production Program in a public school where 24 elementary students each year will learn how to use computers and create music through music software.
Over the last several years, Haiti has been like a tumultuous sea where many Haitians, on a daily basis, are treading water just to keep afloat. Together, with the generous support of all those who love and believe in Haiti, youth and communities continue to push forward. Sophis likens What If Foundation to a life raft keeping one lucky community afloat.
“I look forward to helping What If Foundation keep the existing raft steady while constructing similar rafts in other communities in the countryside.”
Thank you Sophis for all you do to support children and communities in Haiti. We are honored to have you serve with us at What If Foundation and wish you a lifetime of joy and celebration!
