The Design
What If has worked with our partners in Haiti (Na Rive) and with Builders Without Borders (BWB) to complete designs for a kitchen, cafeteria/auditorium and 2-story K-13th grade school. The project has been designed so that it can be built in phases, over time, as funds are raised. It has also been designed to make use of sustainable local materials and clean energy sources, along with earthquake resistant technologies, to make the environment as safe as possible for the children.
We were delighted to have raised enough funds to start construction of Phase 1 in August 2012. Our partners have completed the perimeter wall around the property in November 2012 and we’re now excited to have started construction on the kitchen and cafeteria/auditorium in a multi-purpose building in late January 2013. This building will provide a safe, permanent home for the current food and education programs, as well as clean water, electricity and sanitation services. Phase 2 of construction involves the building of a k-3rd grade school, and construction phases 3 and 4 involve the expansion of that school to a full K-13th grade school.
