Providing hope and opportunity to impoverished children in Haiti

After School Program

gardencropEarthquake Update

Since the catastrophic earthquake of January 12th, the after-school program we fund has transitioned into an afternoon program for children that takes place before the food program meals are served.  With schools closed in Port-au-Prince and no date set for their reopening, this two-hour gathering is treasured by the hundreds of kids who attend.  Members of the education staff are teaching the children songs, providing materials for arts and crafts, and leading group discussions.  Lavarice Gaudin, our earthquake relief coordinator, told me the teachers choose one subject a day to explore with the children.  Topics have included the earthquake and related fears, courage, service to others, life skills and values.

An English class is also taking place from 5 – 7pm every Monday – Friday.  Many students and other community members are interested in learning English to help with translation for visiting health care and other relief workers.

After-School Program History

Thanks to the success of the annual Summer Camp and its strong leadership, an after-school program for the St. Clare’s community was launched in September 2009 as a way for students to continue to learn income producing skills, develop confidence and take steps on the way to self sufficiency.

Using existing equipment that was purchased over the years for the summer camp, the after-school program started out on a tiny budget.  We’re hopeful to expand it over time.

Classes that have been offered include computer instruction, sewing, cooking, tutoring, test prep, and the development of a new community garden.

Although goat grazing, water availability, and soil quality remain challenges to overcome, children computerswill soon have the opportunity to learn about growing their own food, and will take ownership as this garden flourishes. If you are interested in doing a fundraiser to provide more resources for the garden project (or the food program or school scholarships), please contact us.
