Supporting food and education programs for impoverished children in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, providing hope and opportunity for a brighter future

The food program at St. Clare’s was packed during my visit. About 1,700 people were fed each day. At noon, 450 campers and about 25 staff ate. Then another 1,000 children came at 2pm for the regular food program. About 200 adults were served after all the children were finished eating. On one day we ran out of food, so some people (ages 20 -80) had to be sent away hungry. On the other days, there was enough for everybody. All the children streaming in, in a long line that never seemed to stop – it’s hard to describe. To know that the meals they’re receiving are paid for through the What If? Foundation, to see on their faces the excitement to eat as well as their weakness from hunger and how desperately these meals are needed, to watch the cooks sweating in the heat, preparing gigantic pots of absolutely delicious rice, beans, vegetable stew, and on a couple days, a piece of meat – and doing this with great love and faith – it’s really is as Fr. Jean-Juste says, a celebration of sharing. Love in action.    Margaret Trost
